Sorting Out The First Baucom Lines in North Carolina
By Jim Baucomjim0400@aol.com retired aerospace electrical engineer, a descendant of John Baucom and Rachel unknown via their son Cader
Over fifty different spellings have been found for the descendants of these first Baucoms, Baucums,Balkcoms, Bawcoms etc.
Church records show that a Nicholas Baucom had a son John baptized 1 JUL 1725 at Baltimore MD and his last recorded land transaction at Baltimore MD was the sale of his property in 1739. Three years later in1742 Nicholas obtains land in North Carolina. Nicholas made a will before he died about 1762 in Johnston Co NC that included a son John who was NOT the husband of Rachel.
Descendants of Nicholas are in Haplogroup R-M269 and descendants of John and Rachel are in Haplogroup I-M223 as shown in my Baucom Y DNA project that is shown later.
A Monroe Enquirer newspaper about descendants of Josiah and Lewis Baucom published in 1932 and 1958 states that their father John and his brother Ransom, were the sons of James Baucom and Frances Drake who indentured themselves to pay for passage to North Carolina from England. A copy of the article is shown after the DNA results.
John married Rachel unknown in NC estimated to be about 1750 based the birth of their son John who was born 1750-1755 in the 1840 Wake Co NC census. She obviously was not in Baltimore as posted by hundreds.
Whoever was the first person to post that John’s wife Rachel Barker was born in Baltimore made up a whopper and did not bother to see if it was even possible. Neither John could have married her. She was posted as being born 1733 +/- so when Nicholas and his 17 year-old son John, relocated to NC in 1742 Rachel 9. 600 miles round trip to marry a girl he last possibly had known when she was 9 is a ridicules assumption.
It gets even worse, John’s wife was later posted as being Rachel Petrie Barker born in Baltimore about 1733, the daughter of Robert Barker and Jane Meggott who were married in England 3 AUG 1753, about 20 years after Rachel was born in Baltimore
Until the results of a descendant of John Jr’s son, Bennett Y DNA matched other descendants of John and Rachel, I had thought that this Jr was actually the son of another line because he owned so many slaves, a sign of wealth that neither his father or siblings processed. Also, a descendant of Bennett’s brother Isham was Y DNA tested in about 2006 and he matched no other Baucoms, a NPE.
John Jr and an under 5 male and 12 slaves were in the 1830 census and in 1840. it was John 80-89, a female 40-49 and 24 slaves in the Wake Co NC census.
Many have posted that Jr was the John Baucom who married Fanny Jordan in Wake Co NC in 1839 a year before he died. It is unlikely that a 85 year-old man who has been a widower for over 10 years marry anyone? There were many John Baucoms in 1839 and the female in the census was probably a care giver granddaughter.
About 1750 Baruch Balcom, his wife Patience Blake and their son Ichabod arrived at Beaufort Co NC. Many of their descendant were recorded as Balkcoms in AL and GA. A descendant at www.pbalkcom.com is looking for other descendants to be Y DNA tested.
When I first started my Baucom Y DNA project, a Baucum in AZ, born in KY had a paper trail back to Isham Baucom, son of John Jr but his Y DNA matched no other people in the project, The same thing occurred for a supposed descendant of Aaron Baucom, son of Nicholas. He was no match to anyone in the project.
Y DNA is passed from father to son unchanged with an occasional mutation. Autosomal DNA finds cousins.

A potpourri of information about Union County and its people compiled by John Foster Chapter D. A. R.
Prominent Union County Family Forbearer’s James Baucom And Frances Drake (By D. Nance)
Tradition says that James Baucom and Frances Drake were lovers in England, but poor James indentured himself for transportation to America. After working out his transportation, he sent for his true love on the same conditions and that they both worked out her transportation and were married in North Carolina. They had two sons, Ransom and John. The author knows nothing of Ransom but John was living in Wake county In1790. There were only fifteen Baucoms in North Carolina in 1790 and they were descended from the above John.
Josiah Baucom, with Sally, came with their family prior to 1803 and settled on Richardson Creek on land now owned by John Prichard and are buried near his old home in unmarked graves.
Josiah reared nine, children, to-wit:
[MY NOTE: THIS Lewis was Josiah’s brother. The next Lewis may be Josiah’s son]1. Lewis married Catherine Ellington. Both were buried in Fountain Hill cemetery, near their old home. They were the parents of five children, namely, Bryant. Henry, Joseph, Aquila and Betsy.

e. Betsy, second daughter of Lewis, married James Brantley, a brother of. Joseph Baucom's wife.
2. Lewis was the second son of Josiah Baucom and is buried in Daviscemetery near Polkton, the following two sons and a daughter I suppose to be his as they are the only Baucoms that I have to place definitely.
a. Alfred married first Ann Pistole. who died September 4, 1840, and is buried in Davis cemetery. His second wife was Sarah E. Thomas, daughter of Isaac F. Thomas and grand-daughter of John D. Green. He left no children. See Will Book D. page 132 for his family.
b. Gilliam was the father of seven children, namely: Julia, Rosa married W. L. McClendon. Annis married Mr. Neal, Lilly, Bennett and George.
c. Susan, sister of Alfred and Gilliam, married a Mr. Smith and was the mother of John and Washington Smith, whose son Levi lives near Wingate. See Will Book D. Page 132, Anson county records.
3. Asa Baucom, third son of Josiah, married Elizabeth Pistole in 1820. Lived near Parkers Store on Richardson Creek. They were the parents of seven children, namely: William born August 7, 1821; James, born September 13, 1823, Eliza born February 19, 1827, Martha born April 19, 1828, Sarah, John and Elizabeth. See division of lands of Robertson Pistole, Anson county.

They were the parents of nine children. namely: Thomas married Eliza Curran, parents of Shelby, Thomas C. and Mrs. Mary Jane Moore; Shelby married Elizabeth Edwards, Andrew married Lydia Edwards. Both of these Edwards women were daughters of Matthew Edwards and went to Marshall County, Miss. Wilson; Daniel never married, Betsy married Jacob Thomas, Winny married Jacob Thomas, Winny mar-married James B. Nance, Annie married Thomas Teal. (Will on record in Anson county.)
5. Willis, born July 7, 1809, married first Betsy Curlee, second Fannie Waddell. He is buried in the John Davis cemetery near Polkton. He was the father of ten children, namely: Riley married Jane Rushing, Levi married Sally J. Brooks, daughter of Asa and Lucretia; Rowena married John Q. Little, father of Rev. Jimmy and Rev. Billy Little; William, Sally married a Mr. Pool. Elizabeth never married, Mary Frances married a Mr. Hornback, Minerva married Watt Ponds, Jane married a Mr. Rushing, second, David Hargett. (See Will Book D. Page 102. Anson county.)
He owned a large horse-apple orchard which descended to his son Bill, who had them cut down and had an old fashioned log rolling to pile up the logs to burn. The neighbors tramped Bill's crops in visiting the orchard to such an extent that he became angry and destroyed this fine orchard.
Willis Baucom, fifth son, was one of the champion fighters of this section. known far and wide. It was a custom in his day for men to fight, not because they were bad, but to see which was the best man: They would strip to the waist, strike a ring and the neighbors would stand outside to watch until the best man had conquered, then they would shake hands and depart without any bad feelings.
Henry Baucom. son of Lewis, own owned a mill on Richardson creek in which wheat and com were ground, and an old-fashioned saw mill of the upright sash variety. On this mill, it is said that he sawed all the lumber for the old church building at Olive Branch and would not accept a cent on saw bill and also donated the land for the church. The writer does not recollect seeing him in the church.
Alfred Baucom was the most successful Baucom of them all. He said when he was a young man that he was going away from his people and see if he could not get along better than his kinsmen. He devoted himself to grist and saw-milling and was considered a rich man for his day and section.
The older Baucoms were said to be just and upright men with a quick temper and would not allow anyone to impose on them, but with true hospitality they dispersed their cider and brandy with their neighbors on all occasions.
6. Lucy never married.
7. Ransom married Sally Barnes and were the parents of ten children, namely: Sanders married Esther Williams, sons. James (Mountain Jim) married. Bedy Simpson, children: Marshall and others. William married first Sarah Williams, second Rena Little. son. Ransom Jr. Alvis married first Miss Mullis, second Miss Long. Levi went to Tennessee; Annismarried Madison Godwin, Adllne married Harris Pope. Tilda and Fronnie (these girls went to Tennessee.) Jane never married.

9. Green Baucom; brother of Bill, was born December 24, 1816 and married Emeline Hornback. They had one son, John, who married a sister of Rev. R. H. James, and five daughters, namely: Louise married Hosea Thomas, Sarah married James Hannah, Rowena married Brown Staton, Nancy married John Q. Thomas, and Sirlina married Thomas Harrington.
Josiah Baucom. the progenitor of all Baucoms of Union county and surrounding counties was a wagon maker, and was considered one of the best. He detested sham work and would curse a blue streak when he saw bad work.
NOTE: Ransom was used as a name by many descendants of John and Rachel. Plus there are two Cader Baukum in the 1820 Williamson Co TN.

One more correction that should be made is the made-up German stuff for Nicholas Baucom

Dear Jim- My line is through Nicholas and his second wife, Sarah Lee, so I don’t have a lot on John Baucom Sr. John Baucom’s father, Nicholas Baucom was not German. That is a story going around that says Nicholas was related to a one Jaochim Eric Mailian Von Baucom, and other Von Baucom “stories” with a story of the Heidelberg Military Accadamy in 1705. I wrote to the University at Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany twice. According to a reply from Mr. I.V. Hunerlach, Archeiamtfrau, “There is not and never has been a Heidelberg Military Academy. The registry of the University of Heidelberg for the period between 1662 and 1704 isn’t saved. The name von Baucom couldn’t be found in the printed registrar of the University of Heidelberg. There is a story of the Baucoms coming over here from Germany on the ships called the “Brigantine” and “Fatherland.” No one in Germany or in the USA can find either one of those ships. So- to me anyway, this German and von Baucom story is just that- a story with no foundation to it.
My connection to the Baucoms: Sandra (me), Albert Caves my grandfather, his parents Maggie Sarah Lee Baucom and John Wright Caves, Moses Baucom Jr., Moses Baucom, Sr., Nicholas Baucom Jr. and Nicholas Baucom Sr. and second wife Sarah Lee.
Grandma Maggie helped raise me. She said the Baucoms are Irish and English and mostly English up to Moses Sr., then from Moses Sr. add in Cherokee. She said her daddy only mentioned the Irish a couple of times- mostly he just said English and Cherokee.
